The traditional product lifecycle is rapidly losing its explanatory power in today's industrial landscape. Competitive advantage is no longer created primarily at the point of sale but is continuously generated throughout the entire lifecycle through the intelligent integration of products, services, data, and adaptive business models.
This book introduces Lifecycle Value Management as a novel paradigm for engineering, managing, and expanding value across multiple product lifecycles. It argues that industrial systems should no longer be regarded as linearly ageing assets but as dynamic, reconfigurable value systems whose performance, functionality, and economic potential can be continuously enhanced, regenerated, and reinvented. Inspired by the Turritopsis paradigm—the extraordinary biological ability to restart a lifecycle under specific conditions—the book develops a fundamentally new perspective on industrial value creation. It demonstrates how data-driven diagnostics, intelligent services, continuous feedback, digital twins, and targeted reconfiguration enable technical systems to transition repeatedly into new value-generating states instead of following an inevitable path of decline. At the heart of the book is the Lifecycle Value Architecture (LVA), complemented by an integrated operating model structured around the dimensions of Strategy, Data, Performance, and Resilience. Together, these frameworks provide managers, engineers, and researchers with a systematic approach for transforming conventional manufacturing businesses into adaptive, service-oriented, and data-driven value ecosystems. The book combines rigorous scientific foundations with numerous industrial case studies and practical management frameworks. Rather than treating lifecycle management as a maintenance discipline, it establishes it as a strategic capability for creating sustainable competitive advantage, increasing customer value, and unlocking new sources of long-term profitability.
Written for researchers, graduate students, engineers, executives, and decision-makers, this book provides both the conceptual foundation and practical guidance required to rethink industrial systems as continuously evolving value systems and to shape the future of industrial value creation.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dipl.-Wirt.-Ing. Jörg Niemann is full professor at the Duesseldorf University of Applied Sciences, Germany, specializing in industrial engineering with a focus on production in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering.
