Innovations in Civil Engineering: Structures, Materials and Systems
Junxian Zhao | Wenbing Wu
This book provides a comprehensive collection of the latest research and innovative solutions in civil engineering, sustainable construction, and smart city technologies. It addresses critical challenges in designing resilient and energy-efficient infrastructure while integrating intelligent systems to meet the demands of rapidly urbanizing environments. By bringing together contributions from leading experts worldwide, this volume showcases advancements in structural engineering, geotechnical analysis, and sustainable building design, alongside cutting-edge developments in smart infrastructure and urban planning.
The main topics covered include seismic performance and structural resilience, innovative construction materials, advanced monitoring and sensor technologies, energy efficiency in building systems, and environmental sustainability. These areas are vital as they respond directly to global challenges such as climate change, urban population growth, and the need for infrastructure that is not only robust but also adaptive and resource-efficient. By focusing on the synergy between green building practices and smart city solutions, the book offers practical insights into how technology and sustainable design can converge to improve safety, reduce environmental impact, and enhance the quality of urban life.
This volume also addresses key problems such as reducing the carbon footprint of construction, improving structural safety under dynamic loads like earthquakes, and implementing intelligent monitoring systems for real-time infrastructure management. These solutions are essential for developing cities that can withstand environmental stresses while providing sustainable and livable spaces for their inhabitants.
Unique to this collection is its interdisciplinary approach, combining engineering rigor with sustainability and digital innovation, making it an indispensable resource for academics, researchers, engineers, urban planners, and policymakers. Readers will find valuable case studies, experimental results, and simulation analyses that advance both theoretical knowledge and practical applications in the field.
Targeted primarily at professionals and scholars in civil engineering, environmental science, urban development, and smart technology, this book is essential for anyone involved in creating the built environment of the future. It serves as both a state-of-the-art reference and a source of inspiration for advancing resilient, sustainable, and intelligent infrastructure worldwide.
Professor Junxian Zhao is a full professor and doctoral supervisor at South China University of Technology, serving as Assistant Dean of the School of Civil Engineering and Transportation and Director of the Department of Civil Engineering. He has led pioneering work in developing anti-seismic design methods at both the component and structural levels, significantly improving the ductility, stability, and coordination performance of damping systems. Professor Zhao has published over 80 research papers, with more than 30 high-impact articles appearing in top international and domestic journals such as EESD, Earthquake Spectra, ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, and Journal of Building Structures. His research outcomes have been widely applied in over 100 engineering projects across more than 10 provinces in China, including landmark structures such as the Beijing Daxing International Airport and Asia’s largest-span aircraft hangar. He serves as an editorial board member of several academic journals, including Earthquake Engineering and Resilience, Buildings (as guest editor for a special issue on seismic resilience), and Journal of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is actively engaged in academic societies such as the Earthquake Engineering Committee of the Chinese Seismological Society and the Seismic Mitigation Engineering Branch of the China Civil Engineering Society.
Professor Wenbing Wu is a full professor and doctoral supervisor at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). Professor Wu’s research focuses on soil-structure interaction, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and vibration theory of pile foundations. He has presided over four National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects and more than a dozen provincial-level and enterprise joint research projects. He has published over 70 SCI-indexed papers as first or corresponding author—eight of which are identified as ESI Hot or Highly Cited Papers—and 36 EI-indexed papers, including one selected for the China Association for Science and Technology’s Excellent Scientific Paper Program. His research has been cited over 3,000 times. He has authored or co-authored one monograph, one textbook, and one translated technical book, and holds 32 Chinese invention patents, 2 international patents, and 3 software copyrights.
Professor Wu actively contributes to the academic community through editorial roles in journals such as Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure, and several youth editorial boards. He is also a committee member of international and national geotechnical societies, including TC207 (Soil-Structure Interaction) of ISSMGE and youth committees under the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering and the Chinese Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. In 2021, he received the Top Reviewer Award from Computers and Geotechnics (JCR Q1), further highlighting his academic impact and leadership in the field.
