This book discusses the structure, form, and development of synthetic ontologies for human-created machines and systems. After establishing a general sense of how ontologies develop and function, the book explores their essential role in computer science, where synthetic ontologies are used to represent knowledge in a machine-readable form. This ontological paradigm allows developers and programmers to overcome existing deadlocks in contemporary computer science related to intelligent machinery and artificial intelligence (AI). The book walks readers through various forms of synthetic ontologies and their potential applications depending on purpose and domain. The process and implications of artificially constructing an ontology is also explained. This book is an essential reference for engineers and system designers seeking unprecedented solutions to increasing the capabilities of robots and intelligent machinery projects.
Vytautas Bučinskas received a degree in automotive engineering from the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (VISI), Lithuania in 1985. From 1985 to 1987, he worked as a work safety engineer at VISI before initially starting doctoral studies at the same institute and taking an assistant lecturer position. After two years, he pursued other work before returning as researcher in the Department of Machine Engineering in 2000 and completing his Ph.D. in the field of Theory of Machines in 2002. He became an Associate Professor and, in 2012, a full Professor of the department. Prof. dr. Bučinskas became the Steering Chair of the Department of Mechatronics and Robotics in Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) when it was established in 2013, and eventually the head of the current combined Department of Mechatronics, Robotics, and Digital Manufacturing. His research interests include design and dynamical properties of mechatronic systems, control of robotic systems, and sensor data fusion. Prof. dr. Bučinskas is a Fellow of the Lithuanian Association of Engineering Industry (LINPRA) and the Lithuanian association of Robotics.
Andrius Dzedzickis received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) in 2012 and 2014, respectively. In 2019, he received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the same university, focusing on sensing applications and control of mechanical systems' dynamic characteristics. As a member of the Faculty of Mechanics at VILNIUS TECH, his research focuses on dynamic processes control, robotics, and sensor development. He currently holds the positions of Professor and Chief Researcher in the Department of Mechatronics, Robotics and Digital Manufacturing. His current research interests include machine learning, robotics, and sensors.
Darius Viržonis is a Professor at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Lithuania. He graduated from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) in 1991 with a degree in medical electronics engineering and began his professional career as an engineer of computer and medical equipment in a regional hospital. In 1999, he received his Ph.D. with a dissertation entitled Intracranial Sonometric Measurements in Humans. From 1998 to 2026, he held academic and research positions at KTU, where he led multidisciplinary research and innovation activities. His research focuses on MEMS technologies, microsystems fabrication, and their applications in healthcare, industrial systems, and robotics. Prof. Viržonis presently serves as R&D Leader at the Panevėžys Mechatronics Center and Chief Scientific Officer at Orius Tech.
