Professor Robert Lancaster is a chair in Materials Science within the Institute of Structural Materials at Swansea University. His research focuses on the mechanical performance and structural integrity of advanced metallic materials, with particular emphasis on additive manufacturing (AM), small-scale mechanical testing, fatigue, and materials qualification for demanding applications across the aerospace, energy, nuclear, and high-performance structural sectors.
Prof. Lancaster has established an international reputation for novel mechanical test methods, particularly small punch and shear punch testing approaches for AM and high-value structural materials. Recognised as a UK national expert in small punch testing, he contributes to professional and standards activities through BSI, ASTM, ISO, and IOM3 committees. His work has advanced understanding of the relationships between processing, microstructure, defects, post-processing, and mechanical performance in several metallic AM systems, including titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, steels, and other critical engineering materials.
Professor Nima Shamsaei is the Philpott–WestPoint Stevens distinguished professor of Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University and the founding director of the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME). Prior to academia, Prof. Shamsaei spent many years in industry, including leadership roles focused on fatigue analysis and durability test development. In 2013, he joined Mississippi State University, where he launched a university-level additive manufacturing (AM) research program. His research centres on the structural integrity of additively manufactured metallic materials, a focus he continues at Auburn University. Prof. Shamsaei has published over 350 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings and delivered more than 200 technical presentations, including 70+ invited and keynote talks, in the areas of fatigue, fracture, mechanics of materials, and AM qualification, certification, and standardization. His research is supported by numerous government agencies and industrial partners to accelerate the industrial adoption of additive manufacturing technologies.
