The Palgrave Handbook of Linguistic Landscapes
Amiena Peck | Gilles Baro | Quentin Williams
This authoritative handbook examines the foundation, current and future trajectories of Linguistic Landscapes research globally, offering a summary of the field across three decades as well as its key methodological innovations. This volume is guided by fundamental questions: what is Linguistic Landscapes and how did it come about? What unique insights does it offer to foundational linguistic questions, such as what constitutes a sign, and how can we analyse it? What are the established and innovative methodologies embraced in Linguistic Landscapes Studies? How has research evolved to address contemporary issues in sociolinguistics? And finally, where is this dynamic discipline headed? To respond to these questions, this volume brings together scholars from the Global South and North, who address questions of identity, culture, affect and ideology. Throughout their chapters, authors tackle novel areas of research, including rural spaces, bodies, the Anthropocene and the algorithmic digital world. This handbook will be an essential resource for researchers and students in Sociolinguistics, Semiotics, Human Geography and Urban Studies.
