Assertiveness as a Social Virtue

Social Responsibility and Welfare

Susana Castaños-Cervantes | Ferdoos Abed Rabo Alissa | Nicole M. Vélez Agosto

Psychology / General

This book offers an interdisciplinary, globally informed analysis of assertiveness, positioning it as a crucial factor in social well-being. Moving beyond traditional skill-based models, it adopts a gender-sensitive, human rights–based, and culturally contextualized perspective, with special emphasis on non-Western societies, low- and middle-income countries, war zones, and populations experiencing structural vulnerability. By synthesizing insights from psychology, pedagogy, sociology, ethics, and philosophy, the book redefines assertiveness as a socially situated virtue and a collective responsibility. However, the development and acceptance of assertiveness are not universal. Cultural norms, social hierarchies, and survival imperatives often limit individual self-assertion, especially among those marginalized by gender, disability, age, socioeconomic status, or ethnicity. Such systemic barriers restrict opportunities for participation and social cohesion. Nonetheless, experiences of marginalization can also promote resilience, collective agency, and resistance, highlighting the complex and sometimes ambivalent role of assertiveness in diverse contexts.

Across twelve chapters, the book examines definitions, types, characteristics, explanatory models, assessment methods, and training approaches related to assertiveness. Drawing on empirical studies, systematic reviews, and original research, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

The book stands out for its holistic approach and commitment to cultural responsiveness and social justice. It uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine assertiveness across life stages and cultures. It offers practical, gender-sensitive, community-based strategies to cultivate self-assertiveness, as well as interpersonal, professional, and functional assertiveness. By framing assertiveness as central to social responsibility, collective well-being, and peaceful coexistence, the book contributes uniquely to the literature. It aligns with ongoing efforts to foster more equitable, inclusive, and resilient societies.

Developed through international and interdisciplinary collaboration among scholars in psychology, education, social work, and related fields, Assertiveness as a Social Virtue is designed for researchers, graduate students, practitioners, and policymakers interested in communication, social behavior, education, mental health, and community development.
