In the 3rd part of the book, readers will learn about the modelling of biomolecular crystallization processes. Expert contributors cover topics such as biomolecular crystallization in microfluidic devices, continuous crystallization platforms, in-situ online spectroscopy and light scattering techniques, and mathematical modelling applied for biomolecular crystallization. Joana Ferreira is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. She holds a dual PhD from KU Leuven and the University of Porto, specializing in protein crystallization, microfluidics, and protein solution behavior. Her research interests focus on biomacromolecules, crystallization and precipitation, pharmaceutical formulations, and multiphase microfluidics. Her work has appeared in leading journals such as Crystal Growth & Design and CrystEngComm, and she also contributed to Springer Nature’s Methods in Molecular Biology series, authoring a chapter on high‑throughput protein crystallization.

Filipa Castro is an Assistant Researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering, at the University of Minho, Portugal. She holds a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Minho, Portugal, and since 2009, her work has advanced from nanoparticle production and multiphase bioreactors to pioneering micro‑ and meso‑reactor technologies for protein crystallization. Her recent research focuses on continuous and sustainable crystallization methods for the selective purification of biopharmaceuticals. She is actively involved in major international projects, including BioNext, CrystalWhey, and PROCRYSTAL, contributing innovative strategies for efficient, scalable, and environmentally responsible bioprocessing.
