Springer Series in Geomechanics and Geoengineering

Micromechanics of Porous Geomaterials

Effective Strength Criteria and Multiscale Constitutive Models

Wanqing Shen

Technology & Engineering / Civil / Soil & Rock

This book offers a comprehensive and structured exploration of the mechanical behavior of heterogeneous geomaterials using micromechanics and homogenization theory, guiding readers from fundamental concepts to advanced multiscale constitutive modeling. It develops rigorous theoretical foundations, presents original contributions such as new yield criteria for porous and multiphase materials, and demonstrates how these concepts can be applied to complex geomaterials like concrete and argillite. By replacing empirical approaches with a physically grounded framework, the book provides powerful tools for understanding and predicting material behavior, making it a valuable resource for researchers, graduate students, and engineers in geomechanics, civil engineering, petroleum engineering, and solid mechanics.
Wanqing Shen received his doctoral degree in 2011 from the University of Lille in France, where he is currently an associate professor (highest grade). His research focuses on the mechanics of heterogeneous geomaterials, with particular emphasis on the effects of microstructure on macroscopic nonlinear behavior, as well as thermo-hydro-mechanical and chemical couplings within multiscale frameworks. His work combines theoretical and numerical approaches and has been applied to various engineering fields, including the petroleum industry and the geological disposal of nuclear waste. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and has been recognized for the quality of his scientific research and doctoral supervision by the French National Council of Universities (CNU).
