This book explores the largely underutilized potential of microbial biofilms and cell-to-cell communication systems (quorum sensing) to transform modern agriculture. The first section examines the structural dynamics of microbial biofilms and their ecological functions in the rhizosphere and on plant surfaces. It highlights how microbial cooperation, competition, and communication shape root colonization, nutrient exchange, and plant-microbe interactions, while also exploring the diversity of biofilm-forming communities that support long-term soil functionality.

Dr. Niraj Singh holds a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Tezpur University, Assam, India. He has successfully qualified several national and state-level competitive examinations, including CSIR-UGC JRF/NET, DBT-JRF, ICAR-NET, SLET, and GATE in both Life Sciences and Biotechnology, enabling him to pursue advanced research in life sciences at reputed central universities and research institutes. Following the completion of his doctoral studies, Dr. Singh began his academic career as a faculty member in the Department of Botany at North-Eastern Hill University. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Ph.D. Cell Coordinator at The Assam Royal Global University, his current research focuses on Ralstonia solanacearum-induced bacterial wilt, functional analysis of virulence genes, and management strategies for the disease in economically important crops. He has actively participated in numerous workshops, faculty development programs, and training courses. He has authored 30 publications, comprising research articles, book chapters, and five books. In recognition of his contributions, he has received several prestigious honours, including the Hayward-Prior Travel Award (2020) for research on R. solanacearum, Young Scientist Award, and Young Plant Pathologist Award, among others.

Dr. Javid A. Parray holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science and completed his MPhil and PhD programs at the University of Kashmir after passing the prestigious state-level JKSLET examination. He has also conducted post-doctoral research at the same university. He teaches at the Department of Environmental Science at GDC Eidgah, Cluster University Srinagar. Throughout his career, Dr. Parray has attended numerous courses and conferences on environmental issues and biotechnology, nationally and internationally. His primary research interests encompass ecological and agricultural microbiology, climate change, microbial biotechnology, and environmental microbiomes. He has published over 100 research papers and book chapters in reputable journals and publishing hubs. In addition, Dr. Parray has authored 29 books with international publishers. He serves on the editorial board and is a permanent journal reviewer. Dr. Parray is a member of several international and national scientific organisations, including the Asian PGPR Society, IJMS Mumbai, and the Academy of Eco Science, IAES Haridwar. Additionally, Dr. Parray is the Course Coordinator for three CeC-MOOCS National Swayam courses in Environmental Science. Recently, he received the PIFI V Visiting Fellowship for 2024 from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Wen-Jun Li received his PhD in Microbiology from Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002. He is currently working as a Distinguished Professor in the School of Life Sciences, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China. His publications include eight monographs, 30 authorised patents, and more than 700 peer-reviewed papers as the first or corresponding authors. His research mainly focuses on microbial diversity under those unusual environments, by using culture-dependent and culture-independent methods, and also on microbial ecology and evolution. He was awarded the World Federation for Culture Collections Skerman award for microbial taxonomy, and 10 other leading awards for his outstanding research contributions in the field of microbial systematics and microbial ecology.
He is serving as an editorial board member or Associate Editor of more than 10 International journals, and he was appointed to membership of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes in 2017, and President of Bergey’s International Society for Microbial Systematics since December 2023.
