Coherent Multidimensional Spectroscopy of Gas Phase Molecules

Peter C. Chen

Science / Chemistry / Physical & Theoretical

This book offers a guide for understanding, planning, recording, and using coherent multidimensional spectroscopy to overcome congestion and complexity problems that plague traditional gas phase molecular spectroscopy. Unlike traditional 1D spectra that are too congested to analyze, these multidimensional spectroscopic techniques produce highly patterned spectra where peaks are resolved and automatically sorted by species and quantum number. The multidimensional techniques described in this book work at both low and high temperatures and are suitable for both fundamental molecular spectroscopy and applications in space, atmospheric, materials, combustion, plasma, chemical, and physical sciences.

Peter C. Chen, professor of chemistry at Spelman College and distinguished research scientist at Agnes Scott College, has focused on the development of gas phase coherent multidimensional spectroscopy for more than two decades. He has authored 17 published papers on the development of numerous gas phase 2D and 3D spectroscopic techniques, including 2D and 3D electronic spectroscopy and 2D infrared spectroscopy. Peter began working in the field of coherent double resonance infrared spectroscopy of condensed phase molecules in 1986 as a graduate student under the direction of Professor John C. Wright at the University of Wisconsin. After completing his Ph. D., he worked on developing new coherent spectroscopic techniques for studying gas phase molecules before he began expanding those techniques to generate coherent multidimensional spectra of gas phase molecules.
