Parkinson’s disease is the second-most neurodegenerative illness and the fastest growing neurological disorder in the world. According to epidemiological studies, the number of people with Parkinson’s disease doubled to over 6 million from 1990 to 2015. This number is projected to double again to over 12 million by 2040.
This book intends to support the clinical practice of health professionals in the assessment and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, based on the best scientific evidence. It presents five main sections namely: 1) Neurosciences in Parkinson’s disease; 2) Clinical Manifestations; 3) Clinical Assessments 4) Clinical Pharmacology; 5) Neurorehabilitation – Assessment and Treatment. Neurorehabilitation topics (Assessment and Treatment) address the practice of different health professionals in caring for people with Parkinson's disease. The work also includes the non-invasive neuromodulation topic (Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), dance, virtual reality, and telerehabilitation.

Clynton Lourenço Corrêa PT, MSc, PhD is a physical therapist with a master's degree and a PhD in Morphological Sciences, has been a faculty member at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro since 2011. He is a professor in the Graduate Programs in Physical Education (master’s and doctoral degrees) and Rehabilitation Sciences (master’s degree), as well as in the Faculty of Physical Therapy. He served as Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy (2018–2019) and Dean of the Faculty of Physical Therapy (2020–2021) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He is a past member of the Education Committee of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS) and currently is the coordinator of the Parkinson’s Disease Study Group (GEDOPA), which he founded in 2011. Since 2024, he has served as Director of the Deolindo Couto Institute of Neurology, with a term extending through 2028. He has authored book chapters and published articles on the rehabilitation of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Corrêa is also a member of the Education Committee of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS), the International Neurological Physiotherapy Association (INPA), and the Brazilian Association of Neurofunctional Physical Therapy (ABRAFIN).
Alessandra Swarowsky Martin, PT, MSc, PhD, is a Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at AdventHealth University (AHU), Orlando, Florida, USA, and a member of the AdventHealth Research Institute. Before joining AHU, she was a professor in the DPT department at the University of Jamestown in ND and at Santa Catarina State University (UDESC) in Brazil, bringing 17 years of teaching experience. Dr. Swarowsky's clinical and research expertise focuses on neurological rehabilitation, with particular emphasis on Parkinson's disease, movement disorders, motor control, and movement analysis. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and serves as an editor and reviewer for international rehabilitation journals. Dr. Swarowsky has coordinated a free, community-based exercise and rehabilitation program for people living with Parkinson's disease in Brazil for over a decade. More recently, she established the Central Florida Parkinson's Access Initiative, an interdisciplinary program that provides rehabilitation and wellness services to uninsured and underserved individuals with Parkinson's disease. Her work integrates education, research, clinical practice, and community engagement to improve access to evidence-based neurological rehabilitation.
