This book seeks to foster the debate about how altered states of consciousness (ASC) are investigated, interpreted, and applied across diverse healing traditions and contemporary clinical settings. Bringing together scholars from psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, anthropology, religious studies, philosophy, semiotics, and hypnosis research, the volume addresses the methodological, epistemological, and cultural challenges involved in studying subjective and transformative experiences.

The chapters explore a wide range of phenomena, including hypnosis, trance, mediumship, anomalous experiences, sleep-related experiences, psychedelics, spiritual healing practices, and psychotherapeutic interventions. Contributors critically examine qualitative, mixed methods, neurophenomenological, ethnographic, phenomenological, semiotic, and clinical research approaches, highlighting both their strengths and limitations.

Maurício S. Neubern, PhD, is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Brasília, Brazil. His research focuses on hypnosis, psychotherapy, phenomenology, ethnopsychology, spirituality, culture, and qualitative methodologies in psychology. He has authored numerous scholarly publications on altered states of consciousness and clinical practice and has held postdoctoral appointments at Antioch University and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. 

Rafaela C. Camões Rabello, PhD, is a researcher and strategic advisor whose work spans health, governance, social responsibility, sustainable development, and institutional transformation. She serves as Advisor to the Strategic Projects Division of the Federal Council of Psychology in Brazil and holds a PhD from the University of Otago. Her research and publications address social impact, innovation, human rights, governance, and interdisciplinary approaches to health and societal development.
