Artificial Intelligence and Headache Disorders
Igor Petrušić | Erling Tronvik
This book is the first comprehensive resource dedicated to the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in headache disorders, with a particular focus on migraine. Although the use of AI in healthcare has been extensively explored, no existing volume brings together the full spectrum of approaches, from machine learning and deep learning to digital twins and AI-driven drug discovery, within the context of headache medicine.
The book addresses a significant gap in the literature by integrating clinical expertise, data science, and ethical considerations into a coherent and accessible framework. One of its key strengths is its multidisciplinary authorship, bringing together neurologists, data scientists, and AI ethicists to ensure clinical relevance, methodological rigor, and ethical integrity.
The chapters provide both foundational knowledge, including core concepts, terminology, historical developments, and methodological approaches, and practical insights into applications such as diagnosis, classification, prediction, and treatment optimization. They also examine emerging opportunities and challenges that are likely to shape the future of the field.
Designed for clinicians, researchers, data scientists, industry professionals, and students, the book also offers valuable perspectives for patient advocates and healthcare policymakers. By combining patient-centered approaches with technological innovation, it serves as a forward-looking reference that not only summarizes current achievements but also outlines a roadmap for future progress.
Ultimately, the book aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, stimulate innovative research, and accelerate advances in the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of headache disorders.
Igor Petrušić, MD, PhD (radiologist, pain medicine subspecialist, and clinical neuroscientist), is a Senior Research Associate at the Laboratory for Advanced Analysis of Neuroimages, Faculty of Physical Chemistry, University of Belgrade, Serbia. His research focuses on developing electrophysiological and neuroimaging protocols for migraine with aura, with particular emphasis on identifying biomarkers associated with different levels of aura complexity. He also promotes a multidisciplinary approach to headache research to advance diagnostic accuracy and improve the prediction of treatment outcomes. Dr. Petrušić has published more than 40 original research articles in the fields of migraine and neuroimaging and serves as a member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Headache and Pain and as a member of the Board of the European Headache Federation.
Erling Tronvik is Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Senior Neurologist at St. Olavs University Hospital. He is Scientific Director of the Norwegian Centre for Headache Research (NorHead), which focuses on clinical trials, large-scale registry-based research, and the use of artificial intelligence in headache disorders. Professor Tronvik has combined clinical practice with research throughout his career and has served as the principal investigator for more than 30 non-commercial, investigator-initiated clinical trials in various headache disorders. He is an Associate Editor of Cephalalgia and serves on the Board of the European Headache Federation.
