Perspectives on Managing World Heritage Sites and Sustainable Development in Africa
Simon Makuvaza
This book critically examines the conflicting views on the provisions of the world heritage programme and the utilisation of natural and cultural resources, including the necessity for infrastructure development, within world heritage sites in Africa. Specifically, the book explores African views on the application of the world heritage programme in Africa and their aspirations on exploiting resources and developing infrastructure within world heritage site areas for the economic growth of their countries. The book also seeks to come up with practical recommendations, which will be drawn from African opinions on how they would like the discrepancy that exists between the provisions of the world heritage programme and the socioeconomic needs of the African communities addressed.
Simon Makuvaza is a Research Fellow in the Faculty of the Built Environment at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Prior to his current position, he taught archaeology and heritage management at the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA) and worked as an archaeologist for the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ).
