Plasma Donation: A Nursing Guide

Zdravko Kvržić

Medical / Nursing / General

This book is designed as a valuable resource for nurses involved in the field of plasmapheresis, offering both foundational knowledge and practical insights. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the plasmapheresis procedure, which plays a crucial role worldwide in collecting plasma used to create plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs), making it an essential guide for nursing professionals at all levels of experience. Whether a nurse is new to the field or has been practicing for years, this book offers updated, high-quality information that is directly applicable to daily clinical practice.

For newly appointed staff, the book acts as an introductory manual, helping them grasp the critical aspects of donor plasmapheresis, including donor selection, preparation, the operation of apheresis machines, and post-procedure care. The content is structured to support learning in a clear, accessible way, ensuring that complex concepts are easy to understand. For experienced nurses, the book serves as a refresher and a means of keeping up with the latest techniques, safety protocols, and best practices in the field.

What makes this book especially valuable is the inclusion of the author’s own practical experience. As a nurse who performs donor plasmapheresis daily, the author provides real insights, troubleshooting solutions, and practical advice going beyond textbook knowledge. This hands-on experience adds a personal dimension to the material, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Overall, this book is not just a technical guide—it is a tool to enhance clinical competence, improve blood donor safety, and promote confidence among nurses performing plasmapheresis. It reflects a deep commitment to quality care and continuous professional development in this highly specialized area of nursing practice.

Mr. Zdravko Kvržić completed the 4-year program at the secondary school of nursing in 2006, and enrolled in a three-year first-cycle professional higher education study program in nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Ljubljana, where he graduated in 2010. Mr. Kvržić is a member of the Nurses and Midwives Association of Slovenia since 2011. He is a licensed registered nurse with many years of professional experience in the field of blood donation, working at the Blood Transfusion Center of Slovenia since 2011, and in 2017, he became the head nurse of the plasmapheresis section, an organizational unit of the Center for Blood Donor Selection and Blood Collection of the Department of Blood Supply.
