The Palgrave Handbook of Arab Film and Media
Samirah Alkassim
The Palgrave Handbook of Arab Film and Media offers a rigorous, expansive account of a century of cinema and media across the Arab world, its diasporas, and transregional networks. Bridging the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, it examines film alongside television, streaming platforms, and digital media. Its contributions foreground the political histories that have shaped media production, including colonialism, settler colonialism, nationalism, authoritarianism, war, migration, and neoliberalism. It also situates Arab media within Global South networks in relation to Latin American, Asian, Indigenous, and diasporic cultures. Following a loose chronological structure, the Handbook examines national cinemas, genres, auteurs, transregional circulation, hybrid cinematic-televisual forms, changing audiences, and the transformations of media ecosystems across territorial and digital borders.
