International Perspectives on Aging
Ageivism
Human Rights, Emancipation and Activism in Old Age
Israel Issi Doron
This book offers a new way to understand old age in ageing societies by bringing together gerontology, ageism studies, human rights, and social policy. Introducing Ageivism as an emancipatory framework, the book moves beyond individual models of successful or healthy ageing to ask how societies should understand old age itself. It examines the social construction of old age, the origins and effects of ageism, the development of older persons as human rights-holders, and the meaning of emancipation in later life. With historical and contemporary examples, it shows how Ageivist activism can inform research, teaching, policy, and advocacy. Written for scholars, students, policymakers, practitioners, civil society organizations, activists, and older persons, it offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the future of old age.
Israel Issi Doron is a Professor of Gerontology at the University of Haifa, Israel, and an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of law, ageism, and the human rights of older persons. For almost three decades, his research, teaching, and public engagement have focused on the legal and social dimensions of ageing and on advancing the rights of older persons. He has published extensively on elder law, ageism, human rights, and emancipation in old age, and has been actively involved in international efforts to strengthen the human rights of older persons, including the United Nations process toward a new Convention on the Rights of Older Persons. His recent work develops the concept of Ageivism as an emancipatory ideological framework for ageing societies.
