The Body and Politics in Ancient Greek Historiography and Philosophy

Pietro Montanari | Étienne Helmer

Literary Criticism / Ancient & Classical

This book examines the role of the body in ancient Greek political thought. While studies of Greek political philosophy have traditionally focused on institutions, values, and constitutional models, this volume shows that political reflection was also deeply concerned with the formation, regulation, and representation of bodies. Bringing together analysis of philosophy, history, historiography, and literature, this volume explores how bodies were imagined as sites of citizenship, education, slavery, gender, desire, self-discipline, and collective identity. In doing so, it reveals the ways in which embodied practices and ideals shaped political life across the classical Greek world.

Étienne Helmer is Professor at the Department of Philosophy and Anthropology, University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
