Practices in Education for Climate Emergency

Disruptive Approaches Beyond the Anglosphere

Júlio J. Conde | Antonio García-Vinuesa | Pablo Ángel Meira Cartea

Education / General

This book explores climate change education practices characterized by diversifying the usual avenues of academic transfer to have a greater and more relevant impact on the social contexts to which people belong. The educational initiatives showcased in the various chapters address climate change education from a socio-critical perspective, with approaches that are more ambitious than just sustainable development. This book provides researchers basic and applied knowledge on the social, educational, and communicative dimensions of climate change, and brings new ideas to the research community that question the hegemonic approach of sustainable development. Additionally, public institutions, cooperatives, and other entities involved in climate change research, social action, and education will find the initiatives showcased in the book of practical interest.

Dr. Júlio J. Conde was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela and a member of the Research Group on Social Pedagogy and Environmental Education (SEPA-interea) during the preparation of this book. He joined SEPA-interea in 2023 as a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral fellow and continues to collaborate with the group, with work focused on climate change education, energy transition, and the history and theoretical foundations of environmental education. As of 2026, he is part of the ATTRACT project at the Post-Growth Innovation Lab (UVigo), which examines the Right to Repair movement and its role in the transition toward a postgrowth society.

Dr. Antonio García-Vinuesa is an assistant professor and researcher at the Research Group in Social Pedagogy and Environmental Education (SEPA-interea) at the University of Santiago de Compostela, with a Ph.D. in education. Additionally, he is a primary school teacher and a telecommunications engineer. His primary research interest lies in climate change education within formal educational settings. He has contributed to numerous publications in collaboration with institutions and researchers internationally.

Dr. Pablo Á. Meira-Cartea is a full professor of environmental education and the head of the Research Group in Social Pedagogy and Environmental Education at the University of Santiago de Compostela, where he leads research that has been studying various topics related to educational responses to the climate crisis for the past 20 years. Within this research, various qualitative research strategies and techniques (interviews, participatory action research, focus groups, life histories, etc.) and quantitative techniques (surveys) have been applied, resulting in over 200 publications and educational resources (educational materials, climate education programs, teacher training courses, teaching guides, and theatrical works). Some of these resources have been adapted for use in other countries.
