This monograph purports to explore the inter-relations and interactions between Chan Buddhism and Chinese pre-modern poetry with overlapping religious, philosophical and aesthetic perspectives. It starts by mapping out the historical evolution of Chan and the development of its various sub-schools, and proceeds to cross-examine the mutual influence of poets and Chan, and of Chan monks and poetry, and in so doing, traces the poeticizing process of traditional Buddhist ji (verses) in China. In the main chapters, the book probes into the influence of Chan on a variety of styles and characteristics of Chinese poets and poetic schools from across a long historical period, ranging from Tang dynasty to Qing dynasty. It also seeks to reveal, theoretically, the inner mechanism of how poetry and Chan are integrated into certain philosophical and aesthetic wholeness. This book makes an attempt to shed light on the evolving patterns for Chinese ancient poetics along with transformation.
