The book presents the select peer-reviewed proceedings of the XVII International Conference on Vibration Engineering and Technology of Machinery (VETOMAC 2022). It gathers the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of vibration and technology of machinery. The main theme of this volume is condition monitoring of hydropower systems. Topics include concepts and methods in dynamics, dynamics of mechanical and structural systems, dynamics and control, condition monitoring, machinery and structural dynamics, rotor dynamics, experimental techniques, finite element model updating, industrial case studies, vibration control and energy harvesting, MEMS, renewable energy, and climate change. The book will be useful for the researchers, engineers and professionals working in the area of vibration, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering.
Dr Rajiv Tiwari is currently Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati since 1997. He worked in Regional Engineering College, Hamirpur (Himachal Pradesh), India for a year during 1996-1997. He completed his PhD from IIT Kanpur in the area of Rotor Dynamics in 1997. He worked as Research Officer for one year in 2001 in University of Wales, Swansea, UK and as DAAD Fellow in Technical University of Darmstadt Germany in 2011 for two months. Dr Rajiv Tiwari works in the area of rotordynamics and design of rolling bearings. He has more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences. He has successfully organised national and international conferences and short terms courses in the area of vibrations and rotordynamics. He has authored a book on Rotor Systems from CRC Press, USA in 2017 and he has developed web and video based courses under NPTEL on mechanical vibration and rotor dynamics. He has been offering consultancy for last several years to Indian industries, like Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Trivandrum; Combat Vehicle R&D Establish (CVRDE) Chennai; Tata Bearings, Kharagpur; NBC Bearings; apart from other local industries in the northeast of India.
Prof. Ashish K Darpe is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi. He is a post-graduate in machine design from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur. He did his doctoral research at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in the area of rotor dynamics. His research interests include NVH, rotor dynamics, condition monitoring, vibration, and noise control.
Dr Mayank Tiwari is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Patna since 2013. He worked in General Electric from 2001 to 2013 in the Global Research and Development Division and the Aviation Division. He completed his PhD from IIT Delhi in the area of nonlinear rotor dynamics in 1998 after which he worked as Postdoctoral Fellow in the Acoustic and Dynamics Laboratory of The Ohio State University USA. Dr Mayank Tiwari works in the area of rotordynamics and tribology. He has more than 30 papers in international journals and patents in USA, France and India in the area of vacuum tribology, X-Ray tube rotors, wind turbine gear box. Dr Tiwari also has 2 design registrations in the India Patent Office. His current research areas and projects are in the area of aircraft engine rotor damping, rolling sliding friction and societal projects in the Swacchta Action Plan of the Government of India. After his BTech from Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College in 1987 he worked in Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Jamshedpur.
Dr. Shree Raj Shakya is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University in Nepal. During his affiliation with IOE since 2003, he served as the Director of Center for Energy Studies and Coordinator of MSc in Energy Systems Planning and Management. His research has mainly focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, integrated energy-emission-economy systems modelling, environmental emission, low carbon development and co-benefits. He has more than 60 papers in international journals and conferences. Shree Raj holds a Doctor of Engineering in Energy from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand with specialization in low carbon development strategy. He contributed to the development of the Biomass Energy Strategy 2017, Energy Efficiency Strategy 2018, Long-Term Strategy for Net Zero Emissions for Nepal 2021 and Implementation Plan for Second NDC of Nepal. He was also involved in the human resource and capacity development-based projects under APPEAR, ERASMUS+, GIZ/NEEP etc. He was a fellow in 2021 and currently Affiliate Scholar at Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam, Germany
Dr. Sudip Bhattrai is an aerospace engineer, academic, and researcher specializing in aerodynamics, hypersonic aerothermodynamics, air-breathing propulsion, and reactive flows. He is an Assistant Professor of aerospace science and engineering at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He has also served as Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Dr. Bhattrai completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from NUAA, China, in 2011 and 2014, respectively, and obtained his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from UNSW Canberra, Australia, in 2021. His research focuses particularly on hypersonic air-breathing vehicles and propulsion systems, with broader expertise in experimental and computational investigation of hypersonic, supersonic and subsonic aerodynamics; detonation and reactive flows; aeroelasticity; and aircraft flight performance and operations. His work combines numerical simulation and experimental techniques to address advanced aerospace engineering problems. Dr. Bhattrai has contributed to peer-reviewed research in international journals, including work on hypersonic intake aerodynamics and aeroelastic response, and has supervised and supported research projects spanning aerospace, energy, thermal-fluid systems, and engineering applications.
