Mental Health Systems and Policy in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Disaster and Mental Health in Muslim-Majority Countries
S. M. Yasir Arafat | Salim Al-Huseini
This book comprehensively examines mental health consequences of disasters in Muslim-majority countries. Covering both acute and long-term impacts, it addresses natural and human-made disasters, including floods, cyclones, earthquakes, armed conflict, and forced displacement, highlighting their profound psychological, social, and public health effects. The volume explores culturally informed approaches to disaster preparedness, psychosocial rehabilitation, trauma recovery, and resilience-building, with particular attention to the role of Islamic faith, community support, and spiritual coping in mental health outcomes.
Structured into region- and country-specific chapters, the book provides evidence-based analyses of disaster-related mental health challenges across diverse settings. It examines existing mental health services, identifies gaps in disaster response systems, and offers practical recommendations for policy, service development, and clinical practice. The volume also discusses prevention strategies and emphasizes the importance of integrating mental health and psychosocial support into disaster risk reduction and disaster management frameworks.
Addressing a significant gap in the global mental health literature, this book provides valuable insights for developing culturally responsive interventions and strengthening disaster preparedness and recovery efforts in vulnerable populations. It will be an essential resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, public health professionals, disaster management practitioners, humanitarian organizations, policymakers, researchers, and postgraduate students interested in disaster mental health, trauma, resilience, global health, and mental health systems in Muslim-majority societies.
