Burna Boy’s African Giant

Dotun Ayobade | Michael E. Veal

Music / Individual Composer & Musician

African Giant focuses on how the album-both as a compendium of 19 songs-and its associated tour combined to foreground a case for African visibility and dimensionality as they are negotiated by contemporary African musicians on the world stage.

While the album did not win Burna Boy a Grammy (that honor goes to 2020 album Twice as Tall), it illuminates the influences and Nigerian-diasporic cultural worlds to which Burna Boy's craft might be read. The book explores the sonic, aesthetic, and discursive strategies adopted by Burna Boy in his quest for a distinct personal style and global acclaim and investigates the cultural force of Afrobeats through one of its key artists.

Dotun Ayobade is Assistant Professor of Performance Studies and Black Studies at Northwestern University, USA. He is the author of Queens of Afrobeat: Women, Play, and Fela Kuti's Music Rebellion (2024).
