Salts Lab: Ions and Solubility
Isn’t salt that stuff people sprinkle on their food to make it taste better? Well, yes and no. This lab will help you understand what salts are, how they work, and where we can find them in everyday life.

Most chemistry labs that teach salts are pretty boring. They just tell you what salt solutions to mix together, and then they tell you what to watch for. This lab is a bit more hands-on. Rather than telling you what to do, this lab just gives you some background and materials and sets you free to explore. You’ll also get some tips on where to find the materials you’ll need. What will you find? What mysteries lay in the white powders?
For this lab, you’ll need:
Glass jars or cups
Filtered water
Table salt
Baking soda
Epsom salt
Chalk
Lye (optional)
Muriatic acid (optional)
